That’s what I wrote.
But saying he might vote for another candidate, which he clearly used for political gain, be it support from this prospective candidate or voters who were displeased with McConnell, yet once this stops being important to him he fully supports McConnell, which promises to be more profitable at that point, is not how a politician should act.

He never said he WOULDN’T endorse McConnell, in fact he said he didn’t know why he wouldn’t but he wouldn’t commit. That hasn’t changed, it is just, by now, even more unlikely anyone else but McConnell will even be making a play for the position.
