The 90-year-old daughter of Lebanese immigrants, Helen Thomas just announced her resignation amidst huge criticism for her remarks concerning Israel. In an interview, she ordered the Jews in Israel to go back to where they came from.

Her statement made many people angry, because it basically disregards the struggle of the Israeli people for their homeland during and after the Holocaust. It also reflects the view of a certain group of people at a specific time.
In the 1940s and long after that, the Arab world had the opinion that the Jews should get their own state somewhere in Germany, where the Holocaust happened, but not Palestine. This is similar to the view of Iran’s President Ahmadinejad.

So Helen Thomas, who already covered President John F. Kennedy back in the 60s, is going to retire. It is probably for the best, considering her age of 90 years. I don’t think, that she said those things because she is anti-Semite, but to some people the were hurtful nonetheless.
