It’s all about the money in California!

Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina. Those are the two women, who won the Republican primaries in California, yesterday. Both are former CEOs of Fortune 500 companies and therefore extremely wealthy, which shaped the race prior to the primaries.

Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, invested $5.5 million of her own money into her campaign. This was necessary, because her opponent Tom Campbell was already in the lead by a wide margin. Now she is up against incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer, which might be very difficult to win, because of her views on health care and abortion.
The electorate in California is mostly liberal or moderate, so Fiorina’s opposition to Health Care and support for the Arizona immigration law might cost her the election.

The Republican nominee for Governor in California, Meg Whitman, spent $68 million of her own money, mostly on TV ads. This is nearly three times the amount Steve Poizner, Whitman’s Republican contender, invested in his own campaign.

It is likely, that the candidates will receive a massive amount of donations from all over the country, due to the importance of these races. We can only speculate about how much money will be spent until November, but these races will most likely be the most expensive ones ever in California. Nonetheless, we will see in November, who the highest bidder is.
