Mexico challenges Arizona – does anyone care?

The discussion over the recent lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice against the Arizona immigration law doesn’t seem to end anytime soon. Everyone wants to talk, write and blog about it. It is really interesting to see, that some people are so outraged by the lawsuit. Ever heard of checks and balances? Let the court decide if the law is constitutional or not, that’s their purpose.

While everyone is talking about the lawsuit from the DOJ, nobody seems to care that Mexico also sued Arizona. That’s right – Arizona’s southern neighbor filed a lawsuit.
The Mexican government decided to sue, because it sees its constituents, living in Arizona, endangered.
But which citizens do they intend to protect?
According to Pew Hispanic Center, Arizona inhabits nearly two million Hispanics, all of them legal. Most of them (91%) are from Mexico. But only 33% are born outside the U.S. and many of them probably are already naturalized citizens.
So I suspect, that they mean the 500,000 illegal immigrants, who live in Arizona.
But those are the people, who are supposed to be discovered and brought to justice by this law.

Another problem I see is that Mexico threatens Arizona’s integrity in an American courtroom. If the lawsuit succeeds, the entity which struck down American law was not the U.S. government or the DOJ, but a foreign country.
